17th January

Vanessa Gunter (flute) & Nicholas Freestone (piano)

Vanessa Gunter studied the flute in Oxford with Stephen James and Katey Thomas. She enjoyed a period as an National Youth Orchestra principal before taking up a scholarship place at Trinity College of Music. She has won a number of prizes, including the Muir Mathieson Memorial Prize, the Dame Ruth Railton prize and the Harold Clarke prize for Woodwind.

Vanessa worked for many years as Head of Wind and Brass at The King's School, Worcester. She is now Head of Music at King's St Alban's. She has enjoyed playing with a number of local orchestras and ensembles, including the Midsummer Quartet and Ringerike Ceilidh Band. She is a member of Nova Orchestra Classica, a Midlands based chamber orchestra specialising in C18th and C19th music. Vanessa is an experienced soloist and has given many recitals locally, working with pianists Barry Stone and Janine Parsons, and harpist Jan Scarrott, with whom she has enjoyed extending the flute and harp repertoire through exploring folk/rock fusion. She is very excited to be working with Nicholas Freestone to present this afternoon's recital of British flute music.

The Aleatoric Quartet

Ben Balwin (soprano sax), Evie Cooper (alto sax),

Hannah Kermode (tenor sax), Florence Ryan (baritone sax)

The Aleatoric Saxophone Quartet are a modern classical saxophone quartet playing a mix classical, contemporary and folk music. At their concerts they enjoy sharing music they have discovered, arranged and even written as a group. 

 

The quartet is made up of 4 Royal Birmingham Conservatoire students; Ben Baldwin (Soprano) Evie Cooper (Alto) Hannah Kermode (Tenor) and Florence Ryan (Baritone)

 

Come and join them for a concert of exciting new music, soothing classical arrangements and reimagined folk reels.

Robin Walker (organ)

Robin Walker studied music at Huddersfield & qualified as a teacher at Reading University. He began his teaching career in Farnborough in 1975. He became organist at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Garrison Church Aldershot in 1975 & since then has been organist / choirmaster / Director of Music at St Michael’s Parish Church Aldershot, St Michael’s Parish Church Basingstoke, St George’s Church Worcester & St Mary’s Church Old Swinford. Robin has worked as an accompanist to choirs & choral societies & is currently accompanist for the Worcester Cathedral Chamber Choir.

Grace Shepherd (violin)

Grace is a First Class graduate from the Royal Welsh College of Music & is now a freelance violinist with orchestras including BBC National Orchestra of Wales, English Symphony Orchestra, & The Midland Sinfonia. She is also a deputy teacher at the Centre for Young Musicians Guildhall Conservatoire in London. During her undergraduate study she led the RWCM Symphony Orchestra, performed as soloist playing Vivaldi’s Winter alongside the Baroque Badinerie Consort, led & performed as soloist with the Ignite Symphony Orchestra. She regularly plays at her local Dementia Cafe & Children’s Hospice.
